IKEA has announced a brand new matter compatible Indoor Air Quality Sensor. Named VINDSTYRKA the new Air Quality sensor will support the DIRIGERA smart hub.
People are becoming increasingly aware of how air quality can affect their health and wellbeing. I was amazed when I added an air quality sensor to my smart home how simple things like cooking and cleaning changes the quality of the air. There have been a number of recent studies that have looked into how indoor air quality can affect our health.
The VINDSTYRKA air quality sensor from Ikea features a large display which shows the current particulate (pm 2.5) and TVOC (Total volatile organic compounds) level in the room. It also has a temperature and humidity sensor. It uses a traffic light system to give a glanceable indication of the current air quality.
The paired with the matter enabled DIRIGERA hub, you’ll be able to add the sensor to your smart home and view the current stats on your smart device. This is one of the first matter compatible indoor air quality sensors available. Matter is a new unified smart home experience that will across all popular platforms including Google Home and Apple HomeKit.
The sensor looks to be powered by USB which has both pros and cons. One benefit of having a battery powered sensor is you can place it anywhere. But because the IKEA VINDSTYRKA has a screen, you’ll definitely want to position it somewhere visible.
Ikea has yet to announce how much the VINDSTYRKA will cost. IKEA hasn’t confirmed whether the device will launch in Australia, but most of the IKEA smart home range including the new DIRIGERA hub is available locally.
